How to Change Your Lifestyle and Rid Yourself of Heartburn Pain
If you’ve been paying attention to the news lately, then you’ll know that a growing number of Americans are becoming obese. If we make the mistake of eating too much food at one time or even eating certain problematic foods, then we can experience painful bouts of heartburn. Heartburn can easily be brought on if you particularly like greasy, frieds, or spicy foods. So exactly what can we do to avoid becoming the heartburn capital of the world?
Heartburn can be kept at bay by changing a few things in regards to your lifestyle. If your episodes of heartburn are severe enough, then you may not be able to get relief unless you start taking prescription medication. However, for most of us, three simple, natural changes in our lifestyles can do the trick.
1. It takes your stomach awhile to properly digest and dispose of the food you ingest. Stay in an upright position for at least an hour or two following a meal. By lying down, you will allow stomach acid to reach your esophagus more easily which can bring on heartburn symptoms. This can also lead to a condition known as acid reflex, which is somewhat similar to heartburn. That’s why you shouldn’t do like people in the past and eat a large meal and take a nap immediately afterward. You can burn a few calories as well as get your digestive system going properly by taking a walk after you eat.
2. Eliminate certain trigger foods from your diet, or at least eat them in moderation. There are plenty of foods in the typical American diet that can be a problem. Foods that contain a lot of fat will stay in the stomach for a longer period of time thanks to the fact that your system can’t break them down as quickly. Foods that are acidic like tomatoes can also cause problems. Citrus fruits, chocolate, and caffeine are other types of foods known to cause problems.
